A sterling silver match box case by Tiffany & Co.. This charming, and beautifully made match box sleeve was designed to provide a more sturdy and permanent place to keep matches in the house, or on one's person. It prevented the boxes from being damages, and helped keep moisture away. It also made a household object more elegant.
The box has open ends either side for pushing the match box out from, along with exposed striking plates either side for lighting the matches. Very simple, and neat, and clean, this little box can sit in even the most modern of households. Perfect for use in lighting candles in the house, or for smoking.
Engraved into the top of the box is a heraldic crest of a dexter arm couped at the shoulder, the elbow resting upon a wreath and grasping a Scimitar, with the Latin phrase "Pervicax Recte". This translates to "Steadfast in the Right", and was the family crest of the M'Ewan family
On the side of the box, above the striking plate are a wonderful full set of Tiffany & Co. marks with registration numbers and reference number, along with the 'M' initial. This allows the set to be dated for production under the stewardship of Louis deBebian Moore II, who was head of Tiffany between 1947-1956.
The condition of the box is excellent. There are signs of use, but nothing detracting. There is a perfect original, period correct box of "La Petite" matches in wooden box, made in Sweden. An additional box of these matches will be sold with the box. The box also comes in the original, unusual brown felt pouch with the period correct Tiffany & Co. logo. Circa date of 1940's, made in America.
